Note: conditional residents (2-year cards, typically from recent marriage-based or investor cases) generally file Form I-751 or I-829 to remove conditions, not Form I-90 — using the wrong form is a common, avoidable mix-up.

Legal documentation of any name change (marriage certificate, court order, etc.)
Filing I-90 when I-751/I-829 was actually needed. Conditional residents filing the wrong form causes significant, avoidable delay.
Waiting too long after expiration. While an expired green card doesn't end your permanent resident status, it can complicate travel, employment verification, and other daily needs.
Incomplete name-change documentation. Legal name changes require clear supporting documents, not just a note explaining the change.
Am I still a permanent resident if my card expired? Yes — an expired card doesn't affect your underlying status, but you should still renew it promptly for practical purposes like employment and travel.
Can I travel internationally while my I-90 is pending? Generally yes, though you may want to also carry your expired card and receipt notice, and check current guidance for international travel with an expired card.
Is there proof I can use while waiting for the new card? USCIS can provide an I-797 receipt notice, and in some cases extends the validity of an expiring card temporarily — check current USCIS guidance for specifics.
